Practice American mahjong alone

Deal yourself 14 tiles, pick the two lines on this year's card your tiles fit best, pass away 3 tiles and draw 3, then draw and discard until you make a hand or run out of tiles. The card below has three drills, with a place to log each.

Solo practice drills

One player, one set, this year's card

  1. Pick two. Deal 14 face up. In 2 minutes, find the two card lines they fit best.
  2. Solo Charleston. Pass 3 tiles away face down, draw 3 from the wall. Repeat three times. Did your best line get closer?
  3. Draw and discard. Play to a hand or 30 draws. Count the draws you needed.

Why 30 draws

After the deal there are 99 tiles in the wall. With four players, the wall runs out after about 24 draws each, fewer once tiles are called. If you can't make a hand in 30 solo draws, the line was too far away, which is worth knowing before game night.

What to watch in your log

Over a week, the number of draws should fall as you learn which lines your tiles fit. If one section of the card keeps winning in your drills, it is a good line to keep in mind at the table.

Questions

Can you practice American mahjong by yourself?

Yes. With a set and this year's card, deal yourself a hand and play it out against the wall, as the drills on this page show.

Do I need this year's card to practice?

Yes, for hands. The drills use real lines from the card you'll play with.

How do I practice the Charleston alone?

Pass 3 tiles face down to a pile and draw 3 new ones from the wall, three times, keeping your best line in mind.

How long should a drill take?

About 10 minutes for all three. Do one a day the week before a game.
