With six, two sit out each game. With eight, start two tables of four.

Questions

Can you play American mahjong with 5 players?

Yes. Four play each game and one sits out, rotating each game.

Does the rotation change the rules?

No. The four at the table play a standard four-player game, Charleston included.

Who is East when the players change?

Agree on it: a simple way is that East passes to the right after each game, as usual, among whoever is seated.

Is there a five-player card?

No. The League's card is the same however many play; only who sits at the table changes.
